The Live Tape Page
Anyone who is a fan of MTB knows that seeing them in concert is something special. While the band's music translates great from the studio (record), it is even better when played live. It was always my dream to have the band release a full length concert CD (or in the days of yor, LP). Alas, all that existed were the few live cuts from Where We All Belong (which featured 4) and Searchin' For a Rainbow (featuring one). When I got connected to the internet a few years ago, I found out there was some live MTB music to be had - at the time, for a price, from businesses that specialized in selling tapes of old radio show broadcasts. The quality varied greatly. Some were excellent, some were a waste of money. I soon found that there was a whole Tape Trader Network web page - fans of all kinds of bands that traded this stuff for free! Most of these fine folks think it a sin to sell this stuff (and I agree!). The music was meant to be enjoyed and they willingly share it with others. However, if you don't have anything to trade in return, they (some anyway) will trade only for what is termed B & P (blank CDs or tapes and postage). Usually it's a 2 for 1 deal (two blanks for every one recorded CD).
Many bands, such as the Grateful Dead, professionally taped almost all of their shows and thus they have years of archival tapes to release to the public. Some bands, such as the Dead, the Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule and more, allow fans to tape their shows - either from the audience or from a direct patch to their soundboard... so fans of those bands have a significant amount of live music to trade and enjoy. MTB didn't record many of their own shows and few exist that fans have been able to tape.
Below is a list of all the MTB and Toy Caldwell live tapes that I am aware of. If you know of more, please drop me a line!
These tapes come from various sources, including:
FM Broadcast - these were usually aired live, as the concert was taking place. However, some were broadcast off of an LP. Different sources, such as the King Bisquit Flower Hour, the BBC Rock Hour or NBC's The Source would tape a show, cut it to LP and then distrbute it to radio stations who could then play it as their programming allowed. In later years this same process was done except CDs were used instead of LP. Very few of these exist for MTB. The quality of FM broadcasts these are about the best that exist of live MTB because they were professionally mixed, either as it was aired and/or when it was cut to LP.
Audience Tape - taped by a fan from the audience. Quality of these very greatly. Some are excellent - some are so bad you can't stand tpo listen to them (due to all the audience noise or other problems with the recording).
Soundboard - this is a tape that was recorded direct from the band's soundboard. Very few of these exist. While some may argue these are the best live tapes to have, others will disagree because often too much low end comes thru the mixing process.
TV Broadcast or Video - often excellent quality, but only if from a first or second generation tape.

There are also CD-R and tapes floating around of the actual radio broadcast but they are missing This Ol Cowboy. The bootleg CD has been edited to remove the gaps between songs where the band is warming up or talking - the live tape has that intact. This show is excellent audio quality and a great performance as well.
Hammersmith Odeon, Birmingham, England 1976 - Hands down the best audio quality of a performance from the early days. Ann Arbor, Michigan, March 1980 - The story on this CD is as follows; Toy did an interview with a local DJ (after the show). During the course of the interview, one of the road crew threw Toy a tape. When he got up to go, he forgot it... the DJ picked it up. He later listened to it and only then realized it was the soundboard tape from that night's show! Hillbilly Band, Take the Highway, Heard It In a Love Song, Ramblin', Running Like the Wind, Last of the Singing Cowboys, Fire On the Mountain, Desert Skies, It Takes Time, 24 Hours at a Time, Can't You See, Searchin' For a Rainbow, This Ol Cowboy (Doug vocals), Everyday I Have the Blues (fades out)
Nassau Coliseum Long Island 1980 (Tommy's Last Show) - The last performance of the original line-up. It aired live on W-LIR in conjunction with the King Biscuit Flower Hour. Fortunately, a few fans taped it that night because King Biscuit taped over all but 9 songs on their master tape - so this show, in it's entirety, is lost forever... except on a few old cassette tapes. Luckily, the tapes that were recorded live that night on the radio sound better (in my opinion) than the show King Biscuit later aired (of the 9 songs) as a tribute to Tommy (which a few folks have found on LP). The LP sounds very sterile (because the audience noise was filtered out after the first few seconds of each song). The radio tapes are incredible and capture MTB at their zenith - and you can feel it on the tape! Running Like the Wind, Last of the Singing Cowboys, It Takes Time, Cattle Drive, See You One More Time, Sing My Blues, Take the Highway, Heard It In a Love Song, Ramblin', Fire On the Mountain, In My Own Way, Desert Skies, 24 Hours at a Time, Can't You See, Searchin' For a Rainbow, This Ol Cowboy (Doug vocals)
King Biscuit Flower Hour 1980 - This is the radio show from KBFH that aired in May after Tommy's passing. - Heard It In a Love Song, Take the Highway, Cattle Drive, See You One More Time, Sing My Blues, Fire On the Mountain, In My Own Way, This Ol Cowboy (Doug vocals), Can't You See
"Silverado" 1980 - This is a "bootleg" release from Europe and features the 9 KBFH songs from 1980 and 5 from a KBFH show from Dallas 1981. Songs from 1980: Heard It In a Love Song, Take the Highway, Cattle Drive, See You One More Time, Sing My Blues, Fire On the Mountain, In My Own Way, This Ol Cowboy (Doug vocals), Can't You See. Songs from Dallas, 1981: It Takes Time, Tell the Blues to Take Off Tonight, I'll Be Loving You, Silverado, Searchin' For a Rainbow
Great Adventure Park, Jackson, New Jersey 5/16/81 - Excellent audio quality. Running Like the Wind, It Takes Time, Silverado, Heard It In a Love Song, Take the Highway, This Time I Believe, Ramblin', Fire on the Mountain, The Time Has Come, Desert Skies, Searchin' For a Rainbow, Can't You See, This Ol Cowboy (Doug vocals)

Live from Central Park Radio Show 1981 - Well, it's supposed to be, but it sure sounds exactly the same as the Dallas 1981 show! Fire on the Mountain, See You Later I'm Gone, This Time I Believe, In My Own Way, This Ol Cowboy (fades out as program ends)
BBC Rock Hour 1981 - This is from the British Broadcasting (BBC) radio show of a live performance from MTB in the U.S. in 1981. Running Like the Wind, Take the Highway, I'll Be Loving You, It Takes Time, Silverado, Heard It In a Love Song, Silverado, The Time Has Come, Fire on the Mountain, This Ol Cowboy (Doug vocals), Searchin' For a Rainbow, Can't You See
PBS Soundstage, Chicago IL 1981 - This is from the TV show PBS Soundstage. I have not (yet) found a very good quality tape of this show, which is too bad because it has some seldom heard live performances. Heard It In a Love Song, This Ol Cowboy (Doug vocals), Change Is Gonna Come, Fire on the Mountain, Losing You, If You Think You're Hurting Me, Take the Highway, Mr. President (fades out as credits roll)
Summerfest, Milwaukee WI 7/1/81 - An Audience recording so bad I haven't even listened thru it... but it's out there!

Petaluma CA 1985 - An a pretty good audience recording that is interesting for the devout MTB collector for a few reasons. The band is introduced as The "New" Marshall Tucker Band. It is also the earliest known recording of the post-Toy band and the ONLY known recording of the "studio" band Doug and Jerry took on the road for a year. It features James Stroud, who would later go on to become one of Nashville's biggest producers, on guitar. They rip through some rare live peroformances - Sandman, a song Doug recorded for his solo project (that was never released), Long Island Lady, Change Is Gonna Come and Even a Fool Would Let You Go. I'll Be Loving You, Heard It In a Love Song, Tell the Blues To Take Off Tonight, Long Island Lady, Even a Fool Would Let You Go, Sandman, Silverado, Fire on the Mountain, This Ol Cowboy, Change Is Gonna Come, Can't You See, Take the Highway.
Quincy WA 8/30/86 - A poor audience recording interesting for two reasons; (1.) It is the earliest known recording of the "Spartanburg band" that Doug and Jerry put together after a year one the road with the studio Nashville musicians. It featured the newly recruited Stuart Swanlund and Ace Allen, along with Rusty Milner (who had been with on the road with the "studio" band since Toy left). Tim Lawter, also of MTB's hometown, would join in 1987. (2.) It also features an almost 25 minute "jam" version of In My Own Way. Perhaps the earliest indication of Doug's desire to head that direction. I'll Be Loving You, Heard It In a Love Song, Tell the Blues To Take Off Tonight, Long Island Lady, Even a Fool Would Let You Go, Sandman, Searchin' For a Rainbow, Fire on the Mountain, In My Own Way, This Ol Cowboy, Can't You See, 24 Hours at a Time
Hickory NC 1988 - An audience recording, not bad quality, but with several flaws. Try One More Time, Where a Country Boy Belongs, Desert Skies, Blue Ridge Mountain Sky, Fire on the Mountain, This Ol Cowboy, 24 Hours at a Time (begins on one side of the tape, ends on the other), Can't You See, Tell the Blues To Take Off Tongiht (begins half way thru song), Searchin' for a Rainbow (begins half way thru song).
Ray Wilkins Auditorium, Saint Paul MN 2/04/89 - An excellent recording, possibly from a soundboard. Running Like the Wind, Heard It In a Love Song, Tell the Blues To Take Off Tonight, Ramblin', The First To Say Goodbye (Rusty Milner vocals), Searchin' For a Rainbow, Fire on the Mountain, Another Cruel Love, This Ol Cowboy, Can't You See
Holiday Star Theater, Merriville IN 2/09/89 - An excellent recording, possibly from a soundboard. Running Like the Wind, Heard It In a Love Song, Tell the Blues To Take Off Tonight, Ramblin', The First To Say Goodbye (Rusty Milner vocals), Low Down Ways, Searchin' For a Rainbow, Fire on the Mountain, This Ol Cowboy, 24 Hours at a Time, Can't You See
Billly Bob's Late 80's - An excellent recording, but recording has many patchy starts. Interesting interview, though! I'll Be Loving You (cuts off), Heard It In a Love Song, Fire on the Mountain, In My Own Way, Can't You See, followed by about a 12 minute interview discussing the "new" MTB.
Auto Auction Center, Bolingbrook IL 9/21/90 - Running Like the Wind, Take the Highway (Don Cameron vocals), Heard It In a Love Song, County Road, Stay in the Country, Destruction, Another Cruel Love (Don Cameron vocals), Bob Away My Blues, Searchin' For a Rainbow, Fire on the Mountain, This Ol Cowboy, 24 Hours at a Time, Can't You See
The Sting, New Briton CT 1/23/92 - An excellent recording from an FM broadcast. Heard It In a Love Song, This Ol Cowboy, Tan Yard Road, Take the Highway, Let Me Come Home, Last of the Singing Cowboys, Driving You Out of My Mind, Searchin' For a Rainbow, Fire on the Mountain, Can't You See
Hamilton, Ohio 9/6/92 - A poor audience recording and s short set, possibly because the band was a last minute replacement for the Outlaws. Tucker flew in from Tahoe, where they had played the night before. Southern Spirit, Heard It In a Love Song, This Ol Cowboy, Tan Yard Road, Take the Highway, Fire on the Mountain, Can't You See
Daytona Beach FL 1993 - An excellent recording from an FM broadcast, unique because Shania Twain, who's debut CD had recently been released, was the guest DJ who introduced the band! Heard It In a Love Song, Driving You Out of My Mind, Walk Outside the Lines, Down We Go, Running Like the Wind (fades out)
The Sting, New Briton CT 1/24/94 - An excellent recording from an FM broadcast. Featuring the slow version of Ramblin' as it appeared on Face Down in the Blues (1998) coupled with the fast version as it was originally recorded. Heard It In a Love Song, This Ol Cowboy, Walk Outside the Lines, Driving You Out of My Mind, Running Like the Wind, Long Hard Ride, 24 Hours at a Time, Desert Skies, Searchin' For a Rainbow, Fire on the Mountain, Ramblin', Asking Too Much, Can't You See, Ramblin'
Nacogdoghus TX 1994 - As close to a perfect recording as is out there, possibly from a soundboard. Without a doubt the best quality show from the "Walk Outside the Lines" era. Features several songs from it as well as "Still Smokin'". Heard It In a Love Song (starts part way into song), This Ol Cowboy, Driving You Out of My Mind, Walk Outside the Lines, Down We Go, Running Like the Wind, Long Hard Ride, Let Me Come Home, Desert Skies (cuts off before end of tape), Searchin' For a Rainbow, Fire on the Mountain, 24 Hours at a Time, Asking Too Much, Can't You See

Spartanburg SC 9/19/95 - The band's induction into the South Carolina Music Hall of Fame. A "perfect" recording as it is from the Westwood One Radio Network's CD. Too bad it doesn't feture the whole performance... Heard It In a Love Song, Desert Skies, Long Hard Ride, Fire on the Mountain, This Ol Cowboy, Asking Too Much, Can't You See
