GRANT'S LOUNGE
¬Ý¬ÝAnyone involved the music seene in the southeast back in the early 70's would know of Grant's Lounge in Macon GA. Just a hole in the wall, about the size of a shoe box in downtown Macon. This was the watering hole for all of Capricorn's bands. Allman Brothers, Wet Willie, Grinder's Switch ans Marshall Tucker just to name a few. At any givin night you could go there and see Dickie Betts and Jimmiy Hall sitting at the bar or Butch Trucks or Joe Dan Petty sitting in and jamming with whatever band that was playing that night. Butch would jam with anybody. Some of the worlds best jams came from this little shoe box. Anyway, I was the sound man for a band by the name of High Cotton. We were form the Spartanburg area and were good friends with the MTB. ¬ÝWe were playing at Grant's Lounge at the same time that MTB was recording their second. One of High Cotto! ns horn players (TODD LOGAN) was asked to play on that album and after played on ¬ÝGreg Allman's! first solo tour. Anyway jusy about closing time the Tucker boys came into Grant's. While the equiptment was being packed up we sat there and had a few beers with a few of the Tucker boys. High Cotton's road manager went to get paid and needless to say our bar tab was more than what we made. We had only about $30.00 between us to get back to South Carolina. George McCorkle invited us back to their hotel room for a few beers and see what we could come up with. Some how George talk us into playing a frindly game of ¬Ý5 card draw with our $30.00. I know they had to have felt sorry for us because we were no good at poker but some how a case of beer and two hours later we had won more than enough mopney to get us back home. I will always remember that night. They were true gentlemen then and still are now. They will always hold a special place in my heart.
